Hiring Process

The Powell Police Department offers exciting and rewarding career opportunities to candidates who have the skills and determination to succeed in the law enforcement profession. We accept applications on a continuing basis and conduct testing for patrol officer and dispatcher positions as they become available. Application

You will be required to complete a detailed application to be completed and submitted to the Powell Police Department prior to the application deadline date.

Testing Day

After a review of the applications submitted, some applicants may be invited to participate in additional screening. This screening consists of three portions, a written test, physical abilities test and oral board interview. This testing is conducted in one day, and may take several hours to complete.

Written Exam

The written examination will includes testing on general knowledge and skills. A passing score of 70% is required to move forward to the next testing portion. Approximately 2 1/2 hours are allotted for this test.

Physical Abilities Test

After successful completion of the written examination, an applicant will participate in a standardized physical abilities test. A video of an Officer performing the physical test in the allotted time is below. A written overview of the test can be found here. 

Oral Board Interview

Applicants who successfully complete the written examination and physical abilities test will participate in an oral interview to be evaluated on a variety of aspects by several members of the Powell Police Department. The oral boards are typically scheduled for the afternoon of test day.

Background Interview & Investigation

If an applicant successfully completes the application and testing process, they may be offered a conditional employment offer pending the outcome of a thorough background investigation.

Psychological Assessment

As part of the background investigation, applicants will be required to undergo a thorough psychological assessment by a licensed assessor.​

Command Staff Interview

The final interview is a second oral board interview which will be conducted by the command staff of the Powell Police Department. Again, the applicant will be evaluated on a variety of aspects relating to the position they are applying for.
